The History of KTM Adventure Bikes: From the 620 Adventure to the 1390 Adventure R

KTM has become one of the most recognizable names in adventure motorcycling. Long before adventure bikes became one of the industry's fastest-growing segments, the Austrian manufacturer was building motorcycles inspired by its rally racing experience. Over the years, KTM has expanded its lineup with larger engines, new technology, and improved rider aids while continuing to develop motorcycles designed for both long-distance travel and demanding off-road terrain.

From the original 620 Adventure to today's flagship 1390 Adventure R, each generation has introduced new features while building on the platform that came before it.

1997: KTM Enters the Adventure Segment

KTM officially entered the adventure motorcycle market in 1997 with the introduction of the 620 Adventure.

Drawing inspiration from the company's Dakar Rally motorcycles, the 620 Adventure combined a rally-derived chassis with a large 7.4-gallon fuel tank and a 609cc single-cylinder engine producing 55 horsepower. Rather than creating an entirely new motorcycle, KTM adapted technology that had already proven successful in competition, creating its first production adventure bike.

1998–2007: Refining the 640 Adventure

Soon after launching the 620 Adventure, KTM introduced its successor, the 640 Adventure.

The new model featured a 625cc single-cylinder engine producing 52 horsepower, along with revised exhaust routing and cosmetic updates. KTM continued refining the platform throughout its production run, including the addition of a twin-disc front braking system in 2004. The 640 Adventure remained in production for nearly a decade, becoming one of KTM's longest-running adventure models.

2003–2006: The Arrival of the 950 Adventure

KTM's success in the Dakar Rally played an important role in the next stage of its adventure bike development.

Following Dakar victories in 2001 and 2002, including the company's first win with a twin-cylinder motorcycle powered by the new LC8 engine, KTM introduced the 950 Adventure and 950 Adventure S in 2003. Equipped with a 942cc LC8 V-twin producing 96 horsepower, these motorcycles represented a significant increase in performance over KTM's earlier single-cylinder adventure models while continuing to share many characteristics with the company's rally machines.

2006–2012: More Performance with the 990 Adventure

KTM expanded on the 950 platform with the introduction of the 990 Adventure in 2006.

The motorcycle received a 999.8cc fuel-injected V-twin engine producing 98 horsepower while also delivering stronger low- and mid-range torque. It also became the first KTM motorcycle equipped with ABS, marking another major step forward in the evolution of the company's adventure lineup.

2013–2016: Technology Takes Center Stage

The release of the 1190 Adventure represented a major technological leap.

KTM equipped the motorcycle with Bosch Motorcycle Stability Control, cornering ABS, ride-by-wire throttle, and updated ergonomics. Power also increased significantly thanks to the 1195cc LC8 engine, which produced 150 horsepower. These additions reflected KTM's growing emphasis on rider assistance technology while maintaining the performance expected from its adventure motorcycles.

2015–2017: The 1290 Super Adventure

KTM continued expanding its flagship adventure lineup in 2015 with the introduction of the 1290 Super Adventure.

Powered by a 1301cc V-twin producing 160 horsepower, the motorcycle added features including hill assist, cornering lights, and motor slip regulation. KTM continued developing the platform in 2017 with the introduction of the 1290 Super Adventure S and 1290 Super Adventure R, which added a TFT display, My Ride connectivity, and a full LED headlight.

2015–2016: An Entry-Level Option

While KTM continued growing its flagship models, it also introduced a more accessible option with the 1050 Adventure.

The motorcycle featured a 1050cc twin-cylinder engine producing 95 horsepower and included KTM's Ride Mode Technology package as standard equipment. The model offered riders an entry point into KTM's adventure lineup while retaining many of the technologies found on larger motorcycles.

2017–2018: The 1090 Adventure

Replacing the 1190, the 1090 Adventure R focused on reducing weight while improving off-road capability.

Its 1050cc LC8 V-twin produced 125 horsepower and was paired with selectable ride modes, lean-sensitive ABS, Off-Road ABS, and a slipper clutch. KTM also equipped the motorcycle with 220mm WP suspension travel and 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels, reinforcing its off-road focus.

2019–2020: The 790 Adventure

KTM introduced an entirely new direction with the 790 Adventure.

Built around the new 799cc LC8c parallel twin, producing 94 horsepower, the motorcycle emphasized reduced weight and improved maneuverability while maintaining the electronic rider aids and ergonomics KTM had become known for. The 790 Adventure replaced the 1090 in KTM's lineup and offered a more compact alternative for adventure riders.

2020–Present: The 390 Adventure

Recognizing the demand for smaller adventure motorcycles, KTM launched the 390 Adventure.

Powered by a 373.2cc single-cylinder engine producing 43.5 horsepower, the 390 Adventure offered a lightweight platform aimed at riders looking for agility while lowering the entry point into adventure riding.

2021–Present: The 890 Adventure

The 890 Adventure succeeded the 790 while introducing additional performance.

Its 889cc twin-cylinder engine produces 105 horsepower, and KTM further refined the motorcycle's suspension, braking, and electronics. According to the source material, the 890 was also intended to compete directly with motorcycles including the Yamaha Ténéré 700, Ducati DesertX, and BMW F 950 GS.

2021–Present: Refining the 1290 Super Adventure

KTM continued evolving its flagship with updated 1290 Super Adventure S and R models.

The 1301cc V-twin continues producing 160 horsepower, while KTM states the motorcycle delivers a favorable power-to-weight ratio compared with several competing large-displacement adventure motorcycles. The platform also received additional improvements to ergonomics and electronic systems.

2025–Present: The 1390 Adventure R

The latest chapter in KTM's adventure lineup is the 1390 Adventure R.

Powered by a revised 1350cc LC8 V-twin, the motorcycle produces a claimed 173 horsepower and 107 lb-ft of torque. KTM also introduced CAMSHIFT valve timing technology, a chassis with 73% greater torsional stiffness, updated WP APEX semi-active suspension, revised ergonomics, increased ground clearance, and a new 8.8-inch portrait TFT display.

Additional rider technology includes cornering ABS, traction control, adaptive cruise control, and expanded ride modes. KTM also offers Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) on the 1390 Evo, while the standard Adventure R retains a conventional manual transmission.

Continuing the KTM Adventure Story

From the single-cylinder 620 Adventure introduced in 1997 to today's 1390 Adventure R, KTM has continually expanded and refined its adventure motorcycle lineup. Throughout each generation, the company has introduced larger engines, new electronics, updated suspension systems, and additional rider aids while continuing to build motorcycles influenced by its rally racing heritage.

The progression of KTM's adventure bikes reflects an ongoing process of refinement, with each new model building upon the technology and experience gained from previous generations.
